To start the new semester of 2023, Lompoc’s band program is already doing better than ever. To begin with, the band is in ranked B, which means there are over 40-50 members compared to last year’s A-rank (less than 40). This year’s newly elected drum major is senior Giselle Alatorre. The band has already performed four times this semester, and we are barely a month into it! One of the newest band member, Nora Knott was interviewed to give us her opinion of the band.
According to Nora, from 7:30 A.M. to 9:18 A.M., or from zero to 1st period, the Lompoc school band practices their routines perfecting every little detail. They work on synchronization and overall enjoy their love of music. Nora says, “I enjoy it very much, it is a nice way to wake up in the morning.” They practice so much, that they even work on weekends from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M!
Nora Knott plays the trumpet and says the reason she joined the band was because she “heard of the nice people in the band, and that’s how you can easily make friends!” When asked how difficult the band is and if it is as she expected, Nora replied saying, “It’s easy once you learn your instrument, and it’s as I expected.”.
Nora was asked, “What makes a school band, and what skill(s) do you need in order to succeed?”, she implied: “The music” is what brings the band together as one. A skill she said is needed in band is the ability to listen to instructions, she also pointed out that band is difficult if you have any type of breathing conditions.
Lastly, Nora comments about her personal and group goals for the new semester. Nora says her “favorite place to perform is at the football field but would like to perform at the tournaments” as one of her goals, and as a team, she wishes to “be able to perfect our show performance.”
With a new performance every week, the band showcases their week-long practices, bringing a roar to football games before the game even starts and during half-time. Let’s hope for a great semester for our band!
