The Lompoc High School web and game design class has been an addition to the school for years, the teacher, Ms.Mosby, has been teaching this class at LHS for 3 years. These also are her only years of teaching. Before being a teacher, Ms. Mosby worked in industry for a few years before getting her CTE credential. For schooling, she attended high school at St Joseph’s, she was an undergraduate at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina where she ran track and field. She also double majored in Business Management and accounting with a minor in Marketing. Additionally, she attended Cal Poly SLO and got her masters in agriculture education and her credential, and finally through San Diego University she got her Business/Technology credential.
When I asked Ms.Mosby why she originally became interested in teaching web and game design, she replied, “I started teaching web and game design because I saw the importance of understanding and immersing in the fast pace and ever changing technology represented in ALL industries. I believe understanding the basis of coding can give you a head start in the career path of your choice and creates new job opportunities for yourself whether it is through a company or entrepreneurship. I have seen so much new technology incorporated in the agriculture industry. It is a booming opportunity and growing market. So exciting to me! Learning through game design is a fun way to dive in!”.
Now, more about the class itself. The class is about showing creativity through coding, Ms. Mosby teaches valuable skills that can help you build off the basics of coding to create your own apps, websites, and games. While moving through the technology pathway, they are learning about variables, conditionals, and functions which helps them to continue coding more complex designs and games. This class is a fun way to compete and collaborate with fellow classmates while being able to be creative and design your own games. Currently in the class they are starting to learn the basics of coding but by the end of the semester the beginning level classes will have created their own games and the upper level computer science students will have created their own app. One thing about her classes that Ms. Mosby wanted to share that her advanced technology students are currently working towards programming drones and attaining their 107 unmanned aircraft pilots license through her drone club. They are also working on industry tours.
This class is a great opportunity for many students that are interested in coding and learning more about designing games and websites. There are a lot more fun things to come from this class, so it is definitely worth checking out.
