Cross country. The one sport that doesn’t have many players in it, and isn’t really talked about. Many say they don’t reach for it because they don’t like to run, or simply because they “can’t run.” What they don’t know, is that the athletes are conditioned for it. The races are around 3 miles each and you must go at a fast pace, but it’s something you practice for.
In a race, (which is also called a meet), the runners are either Varsity or Junior Varsity. To win in this sport, a team can have 7 runners but must have 5 to compete at a race. Those five runners are able to gain points for themselves and then add them together. Cross country is different, the less points you have as a team, the better placement you get. As an individual, the placement you are in while running (5th, 25th, 70th. etc.) are the points you end with for the end for yourself.
Senior, Jonathan Gonzalez states that, “Over the past four years that I have done cross country, I’ve noticed that the great positive attitude of the team pushes everyone to keep going and brings great accomplishments during the race. Nobody is left behind and that’s what allows our boys and girls to hold a strong team bond.” Their head coach, Casey Brooks prepares the team again this year. Hard work and dedication is something that our brave runners have. Showing up to practice and running more than 4 miles each day.
