The debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump was viewed and discussed nationally when it was held on Tuesday, September 10 around 6:00 pm. Although many people mention this second debate, what exactly is this debate? The main purpose was to talk about what economic goals the candidates had in mind or what they were planning to do if they became president. The second debate was held in Philadelphia in the National Constitution Center and moderated by the channel ABC. The debate lasted around 90 minutes. The question I want you to think about is who won the debate in your opinion? Why do you think this candidate did better than the other? Harris is running for president as a female African-American and Democratic, and before running she was a vice president as she served her time supporting and helping the previous president Joe Biden. Her job as vice president was to give people support and freedom as she strengthens critical global alliances. She also helped increase more jobs and reduce unemployment. During the debate, Harris said that if she did become president she would help increase family taxes and help the people have more freedom. Her opponent, Donald Trump is an American Republican. He has served as president in the years 2017-2021 and he helped corporate tax cuts, made new immigration restrictions, and made better economic relationships with other countries. Donald Trump said that if he were to be chosen president he would keep the traditional way and be able to deal with the immigrants and try his best to take away taxes and change some things.
The three freshmen students from Lompoc High School that I interviewed are Kaylie Ventura, Karalynn Largent, and Elena Hernandez.
The first student Kaylie Ventura said, “I think that the debate was interesting and that it gave insight into who the candidates are as people. It also somewhat stated what their goals were if they were to become president, but I don’t think that I would watch one again if I had the choice. But for the first watch of it I would say Kamala Harris won” (September 17). Kaylie stated that Kamala Harris won but to her the debate wasn’t really interesting. Although she did learn more about personally who the candidates were.
The next student is Karalynn Largent and she said, “For starters I didn’t watch the whole thing but I would say it was a very intense debate between Trump and Harris but I learned how each of them would handle immigration and their plans to improve the economy. For me I would say Trump won because he got his point more through but it was a great debate to watch and I would watch more times but so far, I’ve still had the same idea of the winner of the debate” (September 26). Karalynn did state that for her the winner of the debate was Trump and the competition in the debate was pretty intense but she found so much information about these two candidates. She also stated that she would watch the debates more in the future.
The last student is Elena Hernandez, and she said, “Oh boy where do I start. Well I think that the debate was pretty boring because they didn’t really state what they wanted to improve if they became president and instead spent more of their time bringing up their mistakes from the past and not really focusing on the questions they were asked like the immigration problem or the problem in the economy. I would almost say that nobody won but the one to get their point more through was Harris so I would say she won the debate. Although I kind of learned who the people were, I’m not watching that whole debate again”(September 27). Elena made her point that for her the debate was pretty boring and she really doesn’t want to watch that debate again and she did say almost no one won the debate but she pointed that the winner for her was Harris.
Well now that I interviewed three students and who they think won the debate there was 2 points for Harris and 1 point for Trump. Now back to my main question, who do you think won the second debate? Even though as a student or not being at the age of voting, your thought still matters because views of younger people can also help the society just like those that can vote. I hope that the opinions helped you find out who your “vote” goes to and that you now know more about who Harris and Trump are. So remember, who do you think won the debate?
