School shootings are very common here in the state of California. As of July 22, 2024, there have been a total of 270 K-12 school shootings in California since the year 1966 (Statistica). So far this year California has had at least 52 shootings since 2008 (CNN). There have been numerous threats and warning signs of there being an incident. In America nearly 12 children die from gun violence and 32 are shot and injured each day (Sandy Hook Promise). In the first year of the pandemic, when schools were closed, the amount of school shootings decreased. Ever since they’ve reopened, people have noticed an increase in the years 2021, 2022, and 2023 setting a record of the most shootings in the United States in 2023 with 82 gun violence incidents at schools (CNN). With almost every case of active school shootings there have been warning signs. For example there have been people posting about the catastrophe about to be made on social media, making threats, and difficulty controlling anger, loss of temper, and impulsivity. Approximately about 93% of school shooters plan this terrible disaster in advance. There has been given an estimated of about 4.6 million American children that live in a household where at least one gun is kept loaded and unlocked and left improperly stored which has played a big part of there being school shooting, suicides, and deaths of their family members. Guns are said to be 68% of the reason there are gun-related incidents and these teens get a hold of them by taking them from their home, friend, or relative. It has been said that most active shooters are mainly teens and the most common age is 17 with 175 shootings taking place by 17 year-olds. Most of these incidents are said to be caused by a person who is struggling with mental problems, they are getting picked on or bullied by other kids and they want to get back at those who hurt them, or they have been victims of physical abuse at home. School shootings have gotten so out of hand these past years and it is better to be aware of your surroundings and not ignore those warning signals that people may be giving or showing you.
