Lompoc held their flag football’s Senior Night on October 8th. The event, which took place before the game, honored ten Lompoc athletes that would be playing their last season of high school flag football this year. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the night’s theme was “Pink Out” and the players sported pink accessories. The players walked out on the field with their family members while a short autobiography was read over the loudspeaker, which included personal details and favorite sports memories. They received flowers and gift bags put together by the other players.
With the ceremony over, the highly anticipated game against Cabrillo commenced. The girls were fired up after the Senior Night celebration, and started the game with 100% energy. Lompoc’s defense was doing an excellent job shutting down any of Cabrillo’s scoring opportunities. They forced multiple turnovers and did not allow the ball to so much as glimpse the end zone. At the end of the first half, Lompoc was comfortably ahead. Touchdown after touchdown, the offense wore down Cabrillo’s defense. Cabrillo became frustrated, and the Lompoc players took the opportunity to climb even further ahead.
This was a special game for both teams, as it was the first time since the creation of Lompoc’s flag football team last year that the two cross-town rivals had the opportunity to go head-to-head. Lompoc was ultimately able to make their school proud. The final score was 54 to 6, declaring without question that Lompoc was victorious. Head coach Ashley Coelho remarked, “I’m really proud of Lompoc’s efforts last night. Every single girl was on point and made last night a big team win. It is by far the best I’ve ever seen this program play in the last two seasons. It was the most epic and special moment to watch as a coach.” This game would only be the start of Lompoc’s six-game winning streak to solidify their position as league champions.
