Mask Mandate

Mask Mandate

On Monday March 14th, 2022 the indoor mask mandate for schools was lifted. After first hearing about this, I was a bit skeptical. I didn’t know what to expect. I wondered how many people were going to be mask free! Personally, wearing a mask is not a huge concern. There are only a few minor inconveniences like eating and drinking, but for the most part they haven’t stood in the way of my daily life.

One may argue, claiming masks are a huge roadblock in their daily life. I can understand how masks may negatively affect some people. They may find that it’s hard for them to talk or breathe through. For these people, the lifted mandate is necessary and appreciated. I believe that everyone is entitled to their own ideas and opinions and if someone believes that for their own personal health benefit, they should not wear a mask, then by all means don’t. On the other hand, I also believe that people need to have more empathy and social awareness. This means that although something may feel comfortable to you, it may not be comfortable for others around you. If something so minor, like wearing a piece of fabric over your face is that big of an issue, then removing yourself from the situation or environment would be the next course of action.

Nonetheless, I don’t think the mask mandate being lifted is a horrible idea. Those that still don’t feel comfortable going mask-free can keep themselves safe and still feel secure, while those who don’t like the idea of continuing to wear them can go mask-free. If anyone continuing to wear their mask doesn’t feel safe on their campus, they might surround themselves with others who are keeping their masks on, doubling up on masks, and/or getting the vaccine. Many things are changing and the world is moving forward. Everyone needs to adapt to these changes and do what’s best for their safety while also respecting others’ choices.
